Who You Are Matters
Where Am I From?
- I am from Miami, Florida, and grew up in a city called Coral Gables. I have lived there for the majority of my life with my parents and 2 older brothers
Tell Me Where You're Going?
- After college, I hope to work as a business/marketing analyst for a fashion company. Preferably, I would love to work in New York City post-graduation as the majority of fashion companies are headquartered there. My youngest older brother also has his permanent job there and I would love to be close to the family without having to move back to Miami.
Tell Me How You Plan to Get There?
- Many of the marketing analyst roles (and particularly in the fashion industry) do not begin recruiting until the Spring semester. Therefore, I do not have an internship yet but I plan on applying to large fashion companies like LVMH, Luxottica, the Kering Group, etc in order to put my foot in the door. I also have experience from last summer working as a marketing intern and skills in CRM in order to make me successful in these positions.
How Are You LIKE Your Parents?
- My parents have both always been my role models and I try to live up to them and make them proud every day. From my dad, I get his work ethic. He is one of the most hard-working and selfless people I know-- sacrificing everything to provide for his family. From my mom, I get her charisma and her kindness. She always taught me to look at the positives in each person and to be kind to all no matter the situation.
How Are You UNLIKE Your Parents?
- My dad is very good at public speaking-- which is one of my biggest fears. I do not have the natural abilities he does to take up the space and attention of a crowd as quickly and seamlessly as he does. From my mom, I lack a large amount of patience she can have towards someone.
Developed Expectations For Yourself?
- I believe I have developed my own expectations for myself. When I was younger, I was always working to make my parents proud and to fulfill their expectations. However, as I grew up I became very self-sufficient and independent--making my decisions and expectations for myself. I do always want to make my parents proud, but by doing so, I have always higher expectations for myself than they do.
Non-relative Role Model?
- I have never looked up to celebrities or "well-known" figures as models because I believe social media fabricates things and their lifestyles are unattainable for most people. I do turn to my closest friends for inspiration as their work-life balance and compassion towards one another inspire me each day.
Connecting With the ANIMAL WORLD?
- I feel a special connection with Sloths. I was jokingly called a 'Sloth' by some of my friends in middle school and ever since and that may be the reason. To be honest, I have never even seen a sloth in real life and none of them are native to around my area. Their mystery to me is what intrigues me.
Connecting with NATURE KINGDOMS?
- Sunflowers have always held a special place in my heart. I lived in London for a short period of time and specifically remember running through a large sunflower field with my brothers and mom. Since I was 4 years old in London, I do not have a lot of memories but this a core one I will remember forever. They are also a family-favorite flower among all of my relatives so they are sentimental to me.

Ava, I enjoyed discovering your career ambitions and nature-related connections. Last year, I spent a few weeks interning with Chanel's Finance & Accounting department in London. If you want insights or help on Chanel or the luxury (fashion) sector, I'm always happy to give it a tentative shot! Speaking of London, you'll have to tell me where you found a large sunflower field. In 4 years, I never saw one...
ReplyDeleteHi Ava,
ReplyDeleteReading the way you describe your parents reminds me of mine. I think many people follow the expectations of their parents growing up, after all they guide us. It's easier to break out of that once you experience the world more and meet more interesting people. I hope you land that internship!
Hi Ava!
ReplyDeleteIn regards to public speaking, my dad is also great at it. I have been going to his lectures, speeches, and interviews since I was a toddler. Funny thing is, when I was younger, I absolutely adored public speaking, but now I find myself faltering over simple presentations. So, something I would also like to improve on is public speaking. Maybe we could practice together, let me know! :)

Hi Ava, I really enjoyed reading your post, I especially liked the pictures you added. I think both traits you got from your parents are great traits to have and to be proud. I found it funny that you relate to a sloth because when I was doing this write up I took a quiz to see what animal I was and got a sloth, yet decided I did not actually relate to it and took another quiz.
